Namesake - Emma

In the world of Namesake, all fairy tales are real. At least in their own dimension. On ocassion people from our world are pulled into the worlds of fair tales to fulfill the role of their character, their "namesake." Dorthy will go to Oz, Alice will go to Wonderland, ect ect. And if these Namesakes survive their journey, they return to our world with tremendous power, where they are then caught up in a conflict waged between those who wish to maintain the status quo and those who wish to destroy it.

It has been this way for as long as anyone still alive can remember. But then when a girl who appears to have no namesake is drawn into a fairy tale world, it throws everything into confusion. And now dominoes that have been building for over a hundred years begin to fall and thus our story begins. Magic, adventure, and mystery await.

Emma Crewe

Confused but not hapless is Emma Crewe, main character of our series. A "normal" twenty six year old woman, Emma finds herself witness to a out of control fire at the library caused by the two warring factions when she's sucked into a mysterious portal to Oz. She inadvertently turns the wicked witch into a purse before donning the witches shoes (who turn out to be the previous wicked witch) and sets off with both of them to discover how to get home and why Oz is all of a sudden covered in more sleeping poppies than it has any right to. And then things get weird.

"Well at the moment you're currently killer on both my heels and my ears."

Hearing is an impressive feat for a pair of feet wear.

The answer, ironically, is "Not in Oz anymore."

Drowtales: Path to Power - An'jhali

Mmmm, how to describe the odd duck of a webcomic that is Drowtales: Path to Power? In a sentence: a subscription based fantasy society building macro RPG webcomic with a story determined by vote.

Confused yet? Allow me to elaborate.

Path to Power revolved around the story of a clan of subterranean dark elves, or drow, driven from their home by invaders. Only roughly one tenth of the city's population managed to escape being slaughtered and those that lived were forced to flee into the bowels of the huge underground cavern system that makes up their world. And that's only the prologue.

During Path to Power's initial run, each reader could play the role of a member of the clan Tei'kaliath that would be drawn as background and/or secondary character by the artist. At its height there were over three hundred named characters and each week votes would be cast to determine what direction the story would take. The comic completed its run in early 2014 and the series was archived. It can still be read from start to finish here: (first comics)

An'jhali

An'jhali is the leader of the Tei'kaliath drow and the main character of Path to Power. The last surviving member of the old city's royal family, she was the youngest daughter of the old queen and far down the line of succession. Now she finds herself inexplicably as ruler, a mantle she never thought she'd have to take up. The responsibility of leading a her rag tag group of survivors weights heavily on her although she takes her responsibility to them very seriously.

Sometimes you got to the start the day off with a little brooding.

The clan desires a swimsuit contest! An'jhali wonders about her clan sometimes.

One upside to being clan leader though is the occasional bit of pampering. Case in point:

Walking on Broken Glass - Kennedy and Maria

'Allo all. And happy Halloween!

Ask yourself: what would you do if you knew you were going to become a sadistic serial killer with a taste for live dismemberment and torturer? You're a pretty nice guy but you know (not think, know) that somewhere down the line something's going to happen to you to make you an absolute monster.

Such is the dilemma that faces Nick Grey, CEO of Grey Incorporated, werewolf, and victim of prophetic dreams. His is a world of magic and monsters, were you have every right to be afraid of things that go bump in the night. The job of Nick and his associates is investigate cases of paranormal violence and if possible bring in/eliminate the perpetrator. However the more good Nick does, the more people are drawn to him. And as he believes that he will inevitably butcher everyone around him, having people get close to him is the last thing he wants. (first comic)

Kennedy Parker

Kennedy is Nick's best friend and action secretary, meaning she has a gun and she knows how to use it. Both she and Nick have feelings for each other but he is reluctant to let her close because she is main subject of his prophetic dreams. While cheerful, she's not afraid to speak her mind and to let Nick know when he's acting like an idiot.

Maria Johnston

Maria is the youngest member of the local werewolf pack and one of the few that awakened at birth. She considers the pack to be akin to her family, as she barely remembers her biological family.

Newman - Gwen

Imagine if you will a modern day fantasy world where gnomes, elves, wizards, and so on all live in a city that could pass for present day Chicago. The days of knights in shiny armor and high adventure are gone but monsters, fell beasts, and abominations of nature still remain.

Enter the Creature Removal Department, or the C.R.D. for short, a government agency tasked with keeping the people safe from monsters. Two of the best agents of the C.R.D. are Newman, a cynical gnomish sword user with a standoffish attitude but a heart of gold, and Gwen, drow sharpshooter skilled at sniping monsters with arrows and Newman with snark. Despite their differences though the two make an excellent monster fighting duo and good thing too. For the land of modern day fantasy is still full of much weirdness that will not go down without a fight. (first comic)

Gwen

No further introduction needed really. But since I abhor wasted space, let's go over a bit more about Gwen and by extension Newman. She and the titular gnome are partners in the C.R.D. and after the first chapter they're also a couple. Gwen at times has difficulty with her drow heritage, especially in the case of Newman as drow genetics/courtship rituals means that technically Newmann is her quite literally her "love slave." Not that he seems to mind that much. Gwen also has the quirk of dressing up Newman in frilly dresses 'cause she thinks he looks cute in them.

Do NOT try to mess with Gwen and run away.

The old drow ceremonial armor comes in hand on Halloween.

Spinnerett - Sahira

Heyo! So I was planning on doing this entree later this month, but this week's been a long one and I needed a short post. So without further ado, let's introduce this weeks webcomic gal:

Sahira

Sahira is Heather's roommate and snarky best friend. She's studying to become a fashion designer and is the one responsible for making and repairing all of Heather/Spinnerett's costumes. Later on it's discovered that she has the power to temporarily copy a superhero/villain's powers through contact with their DNA, although she has expressed a keen disinterest in super heroing herself. She does find having six arms does help with the household chores though.

Caribbean Blue - Kimi

Three friends decide to visit the small tropical island of Caribbean Blue for a nice relaxing vacation. Sounds ordinary enough. However it turns out that a local legend tells of a warrior cat girl saved the island in the past and will one day save it again when evil returns.

Oh yeah, and two of the friends are themselves catgirls. Understandably, the locals flip out. All of a sudden what was suppose to be a relaxing vacation turns into an investigation of the legend intermixed with some comedic beach time insanity. However not all is well in paradise and old forces are beginning to stir again. A fun series that at time flip flops between dramatic world building and wacky hijinks. (first page)

Kimi

Kimi in her human and cat forms

No, she's not one of the catgirls on vacation. No, not the rival either. Yes she's another catgirl. Yes there are a lot of catgirls in this series. So what's Kimi's story? Well, Kimi was one of the island's stray cats transformed by an artifact connected to the original "nekocat" legend.

It's complicated.

A very social creature, even when she was still a cat, Kimi is generally beloved by the islanders and visitors alike and is willing to do whatever it takes to help those she cares about.

I contemplated making this post about one of the others but three factors made me decide on Kimi. One, she really is kind of the face of the Caribbean Blue at this point. Two she's a really fun and sweet character. Three, she has the most barefoot scenes of any of the characters, which I thought you guys would enjoy. ;)

Nya! Kimi doesn't like having her feet splashed with cold water! DX
