Spinnerette - Heather

No, I haven't given up finding webcomic feet to review alternative rock bands.  Well, not yet anyway.  Instead, let me tell you about a webcomic known as Spinnerette.  At its most basic one can describe Spinnerette as being a American style super hero comic drawn in the style of a Japanese manga that draws upon tropes and visual cues from both.

The origin story of the heroine even draws intentional comparison to that of Spiderman's: a nerdy young student accidently gets infused with spider DNA and gains the abilities of a spider.  Donning the mask of a super hero she then goes forth to fight crime and keep the streets of Columbus, Ohio safe.  Hey, not every hero gets to be based out of New York, okay? (first comic)

Heather
Our intrepid heroine.  Super powers: spider abilities, meaning four extra limbs, super strength (and a nice lady six pack as a bonus), wall climbing, super regeneration, resistance to poisons, and the ability to shoot spider silk out of her butt a gland at the base of her spine.

Despite being a teeny bit air headed at times, Heather is actually quite intelligent, being a grad student studding genetics.  Being the new kid on the block when it comes to super heroing, Heather often uses her intellect in combat to even the playing field against opponents who are much stronger or more experienced than she is.

There's a long story behind this.  We'll get into it in a future post.

But believe it or not these two are actually on quite friendly terms.

Man, everyone just hands up on bottom lefty.
During one of the story arcs, Heather gets hit by a burst of energy similar to the ray that infused her with spider DNA in the first place.  Unfortunately this causes her powers to go out of control and only the "super villain" Dr. Universe can save her life in time.

Perhaps not such a bad guy that Dr. Universe.

    1. Indeed! It's definitely a fun twist on modern super hero comics and Heather's definitely one of my favorite characters (a good trait for an MC in my opinion.)

  2. :-) Seems like a fun one. I reminds me a little bit of a Darkwing Duck episode where Darkwing became Arachno-Duck. He also had trouble managing his extra appendages. ^_^
